Azure Window in Gozo

Malta Images

The Azure Window (Tieqa Zerqa) is a natural formed limestone arch situated on Malta’s sister island Gozo.

The Malta Experience recently contributed to a high profile country branding campaign “This is Malta” currently running at the famous department store Harrods in London. This image together with other images from the Malta Experience formed part of an impressive widow display.  Click to view images of this event.

Birgu Street

Birgu Street, Malta

Situated on the south side of the Grand Harbour, Birgu is among the oldest cities in Malta.

When the Knights of St John arrived on the islands in 1530, they made Birgu the capital city of Malta and quickly went about fortifying their new home, building Fort St Angelo on the tip of the peninsular.

During the Great Siege of 1565, the city saw some of the fiercest fighting between the Knights and the Ottoman Turks.  After an epic siege the Ottomans army was eventually over powered and forced to retreat.  To honour the part played by the city, Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette renamed it “Civitas Vittoriosa”.

The city contains many important architectural riches. The Knights `auberges’ (inns of residence), palaces and churches here are older than those in Valletta.
