Hospital of the Order of St John

The “Sacra Infermeria” of the Order of St John, now popularly known as the Mediterranean Conference Centre has a long and interesting history originally built as a hospital by Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere in 1574: this imposing building has a long history and seen many changes over the years.

This picture is of the “Great Ward”, a hall measuring 155 metres in length and was at that time one of the largest in Europe and was described as “one of the grandest interiors in the world”.
