La Sacra Infermeria

LaVallette_Hall

The “Great Magazine Ward” is situated in “La Sacra Infermeria” (the Holy Infirmary), now known as the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

In this ward, everyone from sick galley slaves to invalid sailors and soldiers from the Order of the Knights of St John’s land and sea forces were treated.

The beautiful cross-vaulted ceiling of the ward incorporates the heraldic bosses of Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere, and the cotton plant motif of Grand Masters Raphael and Nicolas Cotoner, alternating with bosses bearing the cross of the Order.

Celebrating the feast of “Our Lady of Liesse”

Here are a couple of pictures of the procession celebrating the feast of “Our Lady of Liesse”.

The Knights of St John brought the devotion of Our Lady of Liesse to Malta, building this small church in her honour in 1620; it was rebuilt in 1740 and again after the Second World War.  Situated close to the Grand Harbour and a short distance from Victoria Gate, this church is well worth a visit.
